There are all kinds of virtual analog (VA) synths and modules ... and then there's the Access Virus.  The Virus hit the music scene in 1997, and quickly established a firm place in the world of electronic music.  It didn't exactly sound like any other synthesizer -- but it certainly didn't sound "digital," either!  You've probably heard the Virus in more recordings than you know -- and not just electronic music. Over the years, Access has updated the line with the Virus B, then the Virus C.  They've expanded the capabilities with more polyphony, greater modulation control, and extra oscillators; and they've broadened the Virus family from the original "desktop" style, adding a 61-key version, and later 37-key mini-synth models in outrageously cool color schemes.  Finally, the Virus TI has arrived!  Why not a 'Virus D' ? Well, the TI is more than just an updated VA synthesizer.  TI stands for Total Integration:  the combining of the ease of use of dedicated hardware synthesis with the flexibility of a computer-based sound creation/editing tool. Let's start with the hardware:  dual DSPs for 80+ note polyphony at higher sample rates; new HyperSaw™ and WaveTable oscillator models; an expanded Mod Matrix, 6 sources with 3 destinations each; a programmable 32-step arpeggiator in every patch; USB support; 2048 ROM / 512 RAM Singles; 16 self-contained 16-part Multis -- even if you erase or move the Single, the sound stays in the Multi -- with individual delay and reverb per part; a refined front panel with a new, larger graphic display and three softknobs; and much more.  The hardware alone makes this a brand new animal! But Access didn't stop there.  The Virus Control™ Companion Software enables the Virus to appear as a VST/AU soft-synth in Mac or PC host applications, and allows easy on-screen computer editing.  The Virus TI can act as a hardware synth, VST/AU plugin, pro soundcard, universal remote, MIDI interface, and more -- all at the same time. Let's not forget the little improvements that make programming and gigging easier:  a bright white beat-clock LED with adjustable brightness (the logo pulses on the keyboard models) helps players keep synchronized to arpeggios; dedicated LEDs provide visual indication of each LFO's speed and phase; each knob turn brings up an on-screen popup indication of the new position, with adjustable timeout; and the Virus TI Desktop comes with its own rack mount kit -- mounting ears, extra labels, and the jack panel rotates so that the jacks face backwards for true 4-space mounting.
